Summer 2026 Travel: Record Demand Meets Record Pullback in the Great Travel Split

Table of Content

Summer 2026 is shaping up to be the most contradictory travel season in years. On one hand, cruise lines are booking record volumes, domestic search traffic is up double digits, and North America is hosting the biggest sporting spectacle on the planet. On the other, a fresh survey shows roughly half of Americans, Brits, and Canadians are scaling back or scrapping their vacation plans entirely.

Travel Destination

The Great Travel Split

According to Deloittes 2026 Summer Travel Survey, just 45% of Americans plan to take a summer vacation with paid accommodations, the lowest figure in six years. Cost is the dominant reason: 32% of non-travelers say trips are too expensive, and 35% say they simply cannot afford to travel this year.

Yet at the same time, domestic search volume is up more than 34% year-over-year on booking platforms, and cruise demand continues climbing. AAA projects 21.7 million Americans will cruise in 2026, up from 20.7 million last year and 14.2 million in 2019.

The World Cup Effect

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 through the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium, is reshaping travel patterns across the continent. Search interest has spiked dramatically in unexpected markets: Kansas City searches are up 700%, Philadelphia up 210%, and Atlanta up 200%.

Expedia reports a meaningful uptick in travelers booking multiple hotels for a single trip, often combining a World Cup match in one city with a second experience elsewhere. Bleisure travel, combining business trips with leisure extensions, and road-tripping are compounding the trend.

Where People Are Going

International summer airfares to Europe and Asia are down roughly 10 to 14% year-over-year, making overseas trips unusually affordable. However, a dangerous heat wave across Southern Europe in late June is shifting demand toward shoulder-season and off-season travel. United Airlines is extending its Newark to Palermo route through December, betting that travelers will choose winter service to Sicily.

Value-driven international destinations like Mexico City, Vietnam, and Panama City are seeing rising demand as travelers chase experiences without European price tags. Meanwhile, safari bookings in South Africa have surged, with the country becoming a top-three travel request, dethroning France in some luxury travel segments.

What This Means for Travelers

The picture that emerges is not a simple downturn. It is a split: budget-conscious travelers are cutting back, while those who are traveling are chasing bigger, more concentrated experiences, cruises, sporting events, and multi-city trips, rather than the standard weeklong beach vacation. For savvy travelers, this means incredible deals are available if you know where to look and when to book.
