Florian Wirtz could find an ideal environment to rediscover his best form at Barcelona, according to German football legend Oliver Bierhoff, who believes Hansi Flick’s side would suit the Liverpool playmaker’s qualities.
The comments offer fresh fuel to speculation surrounding Wirtz’s long-term future, particularly given his childhood admiration for Barcelona.
The Germany international chose Liverpool over other potential destinations in 2025, but Bierhoff believes the attacking midfielder has the ability to thrive across Europe’s leading leagues.
Speaking on Bild (h/t Mundo Deportivo), the former Germany striker pointed to Barcelona as a club where Wirtz’s technical quality could flourish alongside an outstanding supporting cast.
“Wirtz would fit in well, for example, at Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, where he’ll have space and fantastic teammates.”
Barcelona could unlock Wirtz’s potential
Bierhoff’s argument centres on the environment Wirtz would have at Barcelona.
Flick’s emphasis on attacking combinations and finding space between the lines could suit a playmaker whose greatest strengths lie in creativity, close control and linking midfield with the forward line.
However, Bierhoff was also clear that Wirtz must re-establish his standing through his performances rather than rely on his reputation.
Speaking about the midfielder’s next challenge, he said Wirtz “is a world-class player who now needs to prove it once again with consistent performances and by making his mark.”
Liverpool contract makes Barcelona move complicated
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth a reported €150 million and is contracted at Anfield until 2030.
While there are no active rumours linking him to Barcelona, these circumstances would make any potential transfer a major undertaking, especially for Barcelona, who have previously faced financial limitations in the market.
Notably, the Catalans were linked with the German before his move to England, but competition from Real Madrid and Leverkusen’s asking price complicated their pursuit.
His long-term contract at Liverpool now gives the Premier League club considerable control over his future.
